Welcome to The Colonial Motel!  The motel is located in the heart of Grand Gorge, in the midst of a wide reaching forest in upstate New York. We offer a variety of rooms both inside the main building and in a small complex built right next to us. In the summer, we also have a public pool open for your use, to cool down in the hot weather these months bring.

Our Story

In Autumn, nature paints our rolling hillsides with bursts of bright orange and red. Deer, turkey and other small game thrive so abundantly among the foliage that this area has become famous to hunters all over the northeast. Many of them return year after year to our motel.

Winter’s snowy blanket turns our village into a Christmas postcard, attracting skiers to major ski centers only minutes away. These modern areas (Plattekill, Windham and Hunter) offer plenty of lifts, well-kept slopes and the finest snow—making equipment. Cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails are just as convenient.

By Spring, the winter snows have melted into quiet brooks and streams teaming with trout for those of you who enjoy fishing.

Summer comes with an invitation to spend long days on any of the three nearby 18—hole golf courses. Stretch out beneath the warm sun beside our large heated pool, or attend the local Hunter Festival with its arts and crafts and delicious food.

Whatever season you choose, we hope you’ll come visit.

Years in the motel business have taught us that even though people like to travel, they still want to feel at home. We try very hard to help you feel that way!

Each of our rooms is tastefully decorated & designed for comfort. All rooms have their own style & each is equipped with color TV with HBO, free wireless internet access, private bath, fridge & coffee/tea service. The rooms are spacious & we also offer efficiency units that allow for some light cooking. Daily maid service is, of course included.

Over its lifetime, The Colonial has only had a handful of owners, but is has been well loved & cared for. Built in 1842, our Inn was originally a doctor’s estate. Eventually it became ”Steiner’s Colonial” and was operated as a boarding house during Summer months. Dan Tait operated it as a year round motel for the next 25 years, converting rustic cabins into a modern motel. And so now we are pleased and privileged to own and operate this grand lady whose guests become friends and return year after year.
